King's Lynn Custom House
From as early as the 13th century, maritime King's Lynn was one of England’s most important ports. Nicknamed ‘The Warehouse on the Wash’ it quickly established links with cities in northern Europe through the Hanseatic League, set up in 1241 by the German cities of Hamburg and Lubeck whose ships travelled in convoys to deter pirates. King’s Lynn became the first British port to join the Hanseatic League. The town is still a proud member of the modern-day Hanse association of cities.
The town's merchants grew rich importing fish from Scandinavia, timber from the Baltics and wine from Gascony in France. Its ships went as far as Iceland, Russia and Venice. Exports included wool, salt and corn. Its whaling fleet sailed to Greenland every Spring.
Today it is a thriving riverside town with a rich cultural and historical vibe, close to the Royal estate at Sandringham, excellent birdwatching reserves and beaches – and with an exclusive link to William Shakespeare.

King's Lynn St George's Guildhall where Shakespeare performed
Why is King’s Lynn famous?
St George's Guildhall on King Street is the oldest working theatre in the UK, dating back to 1410, and has the last surviving stage on which William Shakespeare performed. Timber floorboards have been found under the existing auditorium, dating back to the 15th Century, and there is strong evidence that Shakespeare acted at the venue in 1592 or 1593 with The Earl of Pembroke’s Men.
It’s also probable that King John left from King’s Lynn on his ill-fated journey across The Wash when he lost the Crown Jewels. There’s a statue of him in the town looking fed up.

Queen Victoria bought the 20,000-acre Sandringham Estate near King’s Lynn in 1862 for the future King Edward VII, then Prince of Wales, and his soon-to-be-wife Alexandra of Denmark.
The Sandringham House we know was built in 1870 for Prince Albert Edward. It was intended to be a comfortable and modern country home for the prince and his family. Throughout the years, the building has been extended and renovated by subsequent generations of the Royal Family, including King George V (1865-1936) and King George VI (1895-1952).
King George V called it ‘the place I love better than anywhere else in the world’.
In 1957, Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2022) gave her first televised Christmas message from Sandringham. ‘I wish you all, young and old, wherever you may be, all the fun and enjoyment and the peace of a very happy Christmas,’ said the young Queen.

The locals changed its name, wisely, to King’s in 1536 after Henry VIII’s Dissolution of the Monasteries.
