About Foraging in the Hedgerows
Explore seasonal plants and the stories they carry.
This autumnal workshop invites you to slow down and explore the abundance found in hedgerows, roots and seeds. Through tasting, discussion and gentle practical learning, you’ll discover how these often-overlooked plants have traditionally been used to nourish, fortify and support wellbeing.
Led by Aleksandra (Alya) of Britten’s Botanicals, the session focuses on building confidence in identifying and working with seasonal plants. You’ll learn how to recognise safe hedgerow fruits, explore the role of seeds and roots in traditional diets, and discover simple ways to bring these ingredients into everyday life.
Together, you’ll sample fruit sauces paired with homemade seed crackers, explore mineral-rich tonics and warming drinks made from roots such as dandelion and burdock, and taste fermented root drinks and bitters. Alongside the practical elements, there will be space to reflect on the cultural meaning of seeds and roots — ideas of grounding, nourishment and seasonal rhythm.
This workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with a growing interest in plants, food or wellbeing. Alya creates a calm, welcoming space where curiosity is encouraged and learning unfolds through shared experience. The session includes tea and cake, with time to enjoy the gardens and grounds at Mannington as part of your visit.
