About Get Away Hide Away

Escape to Get Away Hide Away, a unique off-grid glamping retreat nestled within the peaceful Norfolk countryside near Elsing. Created by a local family with a passion for sustainable living, wildlife conservation, and handcrafted design, this hidden gem offers guests the opportunity to reconnect with nature without sacrificing comfort.

At the heart of Get Away Hide Away is a simple ethos: sustainable living alongside wildlife. Every aspect of the site has been carefully considered to create a low-impact, eco-friendly escape where guests become part of the natural landscape rather than simply observing it. The site has been built using local skills, materials, craftsmanship and renewable technologies, creating an authentic Norfolk experience that celebrates both people and place.

Unique Accommodation

The accommodation consists of two beautifully restored and converted horse lorries, each transformed into a character-filled glamping hideaway set within its own private wildflower meadow. Designed for couples, families and nature lovers, both units provide an unforgettable stay surrounded by Norfolk wildlife.

Douglas

Douglas is a lovingly restored 1967 Bedford horse lorry offering a truly distinctive off-grid retreat. Hidden amongst half an acre of wildflowers, guests can enjoy a cosy super king-size sleeping area above the cab, a well-equipped kitchen, wood-burning stove, solar-powered lighting, and private outdoor decking with firepit and BBQ griddle. Large French doors open onto the countryside, creating a seamless connection between indoor comfort and the surrounding natural world.

Dixie

Dixie is a characterful multi-level horse lorry with elevated viewing decks overlooking the meadow and surrounding wildlife habitat. Featuring handcrafted interiors, a king-size bed, wood burner, fully equipped kitchen, luxury shower facilities and a unique top-deck hideaway, Dixie combines rustic charm with thoughtful design. Guests can spend evenings around the firepit before retiring to a cosy off-grid retreat beneath Norfolk’s dark skies.

Off-Grid Comforts

Although entirely off-grid, both hideaways are equipped with everything needed for a comfortable stay, including private hot showers, composting toilets, equipped kitchens, outdoor dining areas, firepits and wood burners. The site's innovative solar-powered systems demonstrate how sustainability and comfort can work hand in hand.

A Haven for Wildlife

Get Away Hide Away has been designed as much for wildlife as it has for people. Guests regularly spot deer, owls, buzzards, red kites, butterflies, bees and badgers across the site's wildflower meadows and natural habitats. The owners actively manage the land to encourage biodiversity, creating a truly immersive countryside experience where nature takes centre stage.

Perfect for Couples, Families and Small Gatherings

Whether you're looking for a romantic Norfolk glamping break, a family adventure in nature, or a unique countryside getaway with friends, Get Away Hide Away offers privacy, tranquillity and space to unwind. Guests can even book the entire site, enjoying exclusive access to two acres of meadowland surrounded by the beauty of rural Norfolk.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to bring bedding?

Absolutely not. A freshly made, cosy, tucked-up bed is what we want you to fall into without effort.  Towels provided per guest with each stay with a complimentary locally-made soap from Wig and Hall, you can choose your flavour of soap when booking. Please advise on the number of guests so we are able to provide the correct bedding/towels for your stay. Please note Douglas only has bedding for three although you are welcome to sleep a fourth on the sofa bench.

What is in the welcome pack?

It’s a surprise! however please advise at the point of booking any dietary requirements and your scent preferences.

Are the showers hot?

It’s not been easy to be as off grid as we are in a tucked-away field and we are incredibly proud to boast good water pressure and warm water all year round in both our quirky private shower rooms. Our showers whilst off-grid are built to a high standard using extraction and insulation to provide a good environment for hot water and washing facilities. If you do experience an issue with one of the showers on site please make us aware as soon as possible so we are able to fix any issues.

Does the compost toilet smell?

No, it really doesn’t. We do not store the compost within the toilet which enables us to provide a fresh bed of hemp shavings upon your first eco-friendly visit. A draw pipe is used for good airflow so you can take your guilt free visit in comfort. We often get told our compost toilets are the best people have ever experienced.

Can we cook onsite?

Each lorry comes with a well-equipped kitchen including full size gas oven grill hob combo with all the pot/pans/kettles/knives and baking trays you could need.  A full complement of cups, glasses, plates, bowls and cutlery is provided. If you wish to cook on the fire pit we have a handmade griddle complete with BBQ utensils and plates suitable for use outside provided. Eco friendly washing up liquid, cloths and tea towels can be found under sink.

How private are the units from one another?

We have measured door to door at 60 metres. However, we have considered privacy throughout the unit builds and site development. For example, using a long screen across the field, utilising the fall of the field to not interrupt the view but add to privacy of each unit. Both the units have exclusive kitchen and WC facilities, fire pit and wildflower meadow. The only shared space is the car park.

Do we need to bring firewood?

For each stay a bag of firewood suitable for use on the fire pit and one for the wood burner provided with fire lighters and kindling. If you wish to have more bags we can provide these at cost on site, option to pay by pay pal or cash on the day. Also an option to book additional wood at the point of booking online. Please no foraging on site, we often let certain piles break down close to trees as the woodlice and other creepies enjoy the environment they create.

Do you allow pets on site?

We love all animals, however due to the wildlife on site we have decided to not allow pets to give the native species the best habitat to flourish.
